Great single strand Necklace
Here we have an ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FAIENCE BEAD NECKLACe During the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under pharaoh Narmer-Menes, the first ruler of Dynasty I about 3200 BC, the ancient Egyptian elite relied upon faience beads for the design of their jewelry. One can, therefore, state quite confidently that faience beads are the single most distinctive element incorporated into the design of every luxurious example of Egyptian jewelry from that moment on. Beads continue to characterize ancient Egyptian jewelry as late as the Roman Imperial Period of the second and third centuries AD. The ancient Egyptians recognized the shimmering quality of faience, the glistening surfaces of which reminded them of semi-precious stones. Moreover, the elite members of ancient Egyptian society prized the mystical value of faience and associated its colors with the symbolism of their venerable mythologies. The ancient faience beads from which these choker length necklaces are designed are imbued with these symbolic and mystical properties. So, for example, the colors red and yellow were associated with the sun-god Re, giver of life and guarantor of prosperity. The colors green and blue were associated with the River Nile and the plant kingdom. As such they were regarded as talismans for regeneration and renewal. Such concepts as life and prosperity and regeneration and renewal were not exclusively reserved for the funerary arts. A very careful reading of ancient Egyptian prayers and spells reveals instructions such as, “This spell is as efficacious for the dead as for the living.” The boundaries between this world and the Hereafter were, therefore, blurred, and the living could enjoy the same benefits that one generally associates with the deceased. As a result, these necklaces are not only ornaments of great beauty, characterized by their glimmering surfaces, which make bold fashion statements in heir own right. These necklaces are also, by virtue of their ancient faience beads, imbued with the mystical, symbolic properties of ancient Egypt. Whosoever wears one of these necklaces will metaphorically enjoy all of the beneficial karma which the ancient Egyptians imputed to these faience beads—a good life with prosperity accompanied by spiritual and emotional regeneration and renewal. Condition: Great condition overall. Composition: Faience Dimensions: 18 INCHES
